Ooredoo has successfully completed the Middle East’s first live trial of Huawei’s 5G dualband Meta AAU – a breakthrough in compact, high performance network technology.
The trial introduced a new type of compact antenna that merges two key 5G frequency bands into a single, intelligent unit. This approach reduces the amount of equipment needed at mobile sites by half, while significantly improving network coverage, speed, and energy efficiency.
“This trial marks a major milestone for 5G in the region, and a bold step forward in Ooredoo’s mission to upgrade your world with faster, efficient, and sustainable connectivity across Oman,” said Dr. Jihad bin Ahmed Al Ansari, Acting Chief Technology & Information Officer at Ooredoo. “By combining higher performance with lower power use and fewer antennas, we’re improving customer experience and demonstrating our commitment to sustainability and Oman’s net-zero goals.”
The new 5G technology boosts internet speeds by more than 30%, and uses 30% less energy, and takes less space on mobile towers, making room for future upgrades. This innovation is key for dense indoor areas like malls and offices, where user numbers are high, space is limited, and demand is growing.
The field trial also supports Oman Vision 2040’s digital ambitions by enabling a new class of high-capacity, energy-efficient 5G networks. Beyond the national impact, results from the trial will be shared across the Ooredoo Group to accelerate adoption in other markets where site space or power constraints present a challenge.
For Huawei, the partnership delivers a high-profile regional reference case for its Meta AAU portfolio, further positioning the company as a technology partner of choice in the next phase of global 5G evolution.
The Meta AAU solution is expected to be deployed in Ooredoo’s next round of 5G expansion projects, where dualband integration is required.
